Struggling with the “Trinity”
Question: "Anonymous" is back (once again) struggling with the whole "Trinity" thing. Pastor John's message was mostly in John 5, and what "Anonymous" heard was that Jesus did what his father told him to (and so should we) but...here we go. If Jesus "is" God, then Jesus was doing what he told himself to do? So he was really listening to himself and doing what he told himself to do? Is there one God or many; one Lord or many?
Anonymous. I started reading the book of 1 Samuel and there is reference to ‘the lord' and to ‘god.' Are there multiple gods/lords? God is referred to as the ‘god of Israel' in 2:30 and throughout chapters 5 & 6. In 6:4 it seems the Philistines have lords/gods as well. Is there not only one god? And why is ‘our god' only the god of Israel? When the redeemed sin and God still blesses
Question by Lisa Blake: I was recently reading in Genesis and couldn't help but be struck by the deception employed time and again by "righteous" patriarchs of our faith. It seems it was no big thing to lie - Abraham about Sarah not being his wife, Leah and Rachel's father deceiving Jacob over their marriage(s), Rebekah and Jacob deceiving Isaac so Jacob receives the blessing and not Esau and so on. Did God really have to employ such tactics to have His will be done, or is it just an illustration of man's imperfection and fallen nature, and God's immeasurable goodness that these men still received God's blessing? If God exists why is there evil?
How can God exist when there is so much evil and pain in the world? Pre-Tribulation Rapture nonsense
Question by Andrew Peart: Thank you for your teaching on the Rapture and how this has been twisted by modern thinking to be the opposite of what is biblical. Why do you think this is so, is it just for pure commercial gain? And second thought is, the church as a body has not seemed to dispute any of the notions claimed in the fictional accounts over the last 20 or so years. Should I be concerned if I don’t read the Bible?
Anonymous: We often hear in sermons that once you become a child of God you immediately have a longing to read the Word of God. If I don't have that same longing, should I be concerned? What happens when you die?
Question by Lisa Blake: I was reviewing the Bible passage we looked at in church on Sunday about Jesus teaching Nicodemus and I'm getting a bit confused on John 3:13 which says, "No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man." Yet, in Luke 23:42-44, Jesus tells one of the criminals crucified with him that he will be with him that day in Paradise. Am I just missing the context in John? The Bible talks about us in "sleep" when we die. Are we "sleeping," waiting for Jesus' Second Coming before we ascend to be with the Lord in Paradise? Death of children
Anonymous: I'm having a difficult time digesting the idea that children and babies are sinners. What is considered a sin? Is there a reference in the Bible that describes what happens to children and infants who die? Do they go to heaven? Human ability vs. Divine election
Anonymous: I just can't understand this. Today you said that salvation is there for all that will believe, and that is what I believe. But this brings me back to the elect. How can you believe if you're not one of the elect? This implies that salvation is not available to all. |
